I have write an article describing how an understanding of chemical reactions has led to the development of new consumer products and technological processes. (examples, fire-retardant materials, antacids, etc) I have no idea wtf to even begin with or research with!! lol Please help! and thank you.

The first thing to do is to chose your topic. I think that you will find any consumer product relies on chemistry and an understanding of it. I am assuming that you do not want to use the examples that you have given, so try paper, paint, oils, gasoline, almost anything.
Once you have a topic, use Wikepedia and Google to get more information.
