I have been taking creatine monohydrate for a few weeks now, and my weight has been all over the place.?

The creatine I am using has been approved by all the consumer groups I researched. I'm not quite sure if it's working, how can i tell? I weighed 186lbs when I started it,and last night i weighed my self i was about 179lbs, I drink water and take it with either apple juice or warm water, I was under the impression i should be gaining weight instead of losing it, I do no cardio, just strictly weight training. Any suggestions?

How have you been taking it is the first question to be asked.

When you take creatine for the first time you need to go through a loading phase. We're talking you need to take a dose (5g) either 4 or 5 times a day for the first 5 days. Along with this you need to take some kind of simple sugar like dextrose. If you can't find dextrose, grape juice works well.

Once you've done the loading phase, then you take 1 dose after your workout again with the simple sugar.

Also, it doesn't make you gain weight so much as support hypertrophy of the muscles. It basically forces liquid into your muscles causing them to swell. This is why you need to drink a lot of water during the times you're taking creatine.

If you've gone through the loading phase and used the dextrose like requested and still don't feel a difference when you work out or you feel a greater pump afterwards then you might be one of those people for which creatine doesn't work.

You might consider adding some ribose or taurine to the mix. I knew a guy, like you, that straight creatine didn't work. He added ribose to his stack and it helped his gains.

Edit: Whey powder isn't a money making scam. It's a way to get more easily digested protein into your system when trying to bulk up without chewing constantly on meat. If it's making you nauseous, then maybe you're taking it incorrectly, you're taking a cheap form of it or your body isn't used to it. Besides, these things take time. You shouldn't expect any big results right away.

As for the creatine issue, if you're pre-diabetic then there's very little you can do about that. If you don't take a simple sugar with your creatine, it's going to take lot longer to get to your muscles assuming it gets there at all. The dextrose induces an insulin spike which pushes the dextrose straight to the muscles where it's converted to glycogen which is the main fuel for your muscles. The creatine hitches a ride on this and gets pushed to the muscles that much faster.

If you are pre-diabetic, you should have mentioned this before because it changes things and you should really speak to your doctor or nutritionist before taking any kind of supplements or starting an exercise routine.
Reply:Heres my take on it. As you said you are Pre-Diabetic so your body might not be releasing the aqequate amount of insulin needed to breakdown sugar and thus preventing creatine from entering your body. Consult your doctor before continuing on with any other supplements. Goodluck!! Report Abuse

Reply:Creatine causes you to store more water, and therefore you can gain some weight from just putting on water. I think over time your weight will gradually stabilize, just make sure you drink plenty of water, eat healthy, excercise, and try not to over do it (follow the suggested doses)

Also, weigh yourself after a bowel movement or in the morning every day, as your weight can fluctuate greatly if you have eaten a big meal.
Reply:Creatine affects liver processing. You may be shedding water weight.
