Can modern republican government work in the long run?

the fundamental things that i learned about democrats and republicans in 8th grade civics are that:

- democrats are for a stronger central government that can have a more active role in our daily lives, i.e. control gun ownership, keep (more) reasonable consumer prices, fund foreign wars and scientific research, etc. unfortunately, to do all that, it needs higher taxes to help pay for these endeavors.

- republicans are for a smaller, more limited government that steps back and lets the people and the states control how things run. this method relies more on citizen participation to get things done, but if the people are willing to get involved, great, plus you can cut taxes.

the question is, what the hell happened? the current government continues to expand, and spend ridiculous amounts of money, while at the same time cutting taxes and thus decreasing the government's income. it feels great in your wallet now, but the with a huge national deficit, how long can we keep this up?

Can modern republican government work in the long run?
Phloyd, I want to congratulate you for asking what has to be one of the most sensible, well-thought-out and erudite questions I've read on Yahoo in a long time. Good for you (and I'm not sucking up for Best Answer, either). Your common-sense will illuminate your world, but I'm afraid it will also frustrate you as well. The world of politics is fraught with illusion and skullduggery. Common sense isn't welcome in Washington, my friend.

To try and answer your question; many political analysts in recent years have lamented the fact that the Republican party has watered-down its platform to appeal to moderates (example; lightening up on immigration reform [like McCain] to court the Latino vote). Many believe that the Republican party is betraying the legacy of Ronald Reagan, and the recent debates reveal the quandry in which the GOP finds itself; who or what is a conservative if our institutions have become so undermined?

As for the Democrats- they've been been struggling to get their party together and define themselves since the end of the Carter administration; the Clinton years notwithstanding (he was riding an economic boom not of his making and failed to legislate anything), the Democrats don't have a platform except for "anti-bush" and "pro-abortion". Even the Dem inner-circle agrees this isn't enough, and are enjoying the cult-of-personality that has arisen around both Clinton and Obama.

So what happened? Money and personality have become the lifeblood of Washington D.C. Lobbies like the AARP and AIPAC have control of our elected representatives and it takes STRONG charisma and a lot of favors called-in in order to get ideals and moral principles supported when organizations like AIPAC make no bones about being able to buy Senators and Congressmen.

Interesting fact: the Bush Administration has spent more on its expanding government than the Johnson Administration.

Vote for Dr. Ron Paul. He's a strict Constitutionalist who believes the role of government is to guarantee the rights as laid out in the Constitution and NOTHING ELSE. He also believes that America should mind its own business. He has a voting record to match, too.

Reply:You'll need to go back and re-learn some of your 8th grade civics material. But, back to your main "question", "Pre" all your dictating of your "political acumen", "modern" Republican government will work "in the long run" just as it has in the previous 240+ years. Just fine. God Bless you.
Reply:The two parts of your question is ok.

Our government can only work until the voters figure out that they can vote for those who will give to them what they what.

Those in power have the ability to give to the voters, that what will keep them in power.

If you look at our current election cycle, look at all the

promises and the give aways. who pays

However tax cuts VS wealth distrubution THIS IS WERE YOU NEED TO STUDY UP
