Is it acceptable at Wal-Mart?

Keeping in mind your morals and ethical views as well as criticisms against Wal-Mart, do you, as a consumer find it ok to shop at there? Why or why not?

[I am trying to answer this question for my senior research project, and was trying to get some input.]

Is it acceptable at Wal-Mart?
I do my major shopping there about once every 6 weeks or so. I am a single parent, and I need to watch every penny I earn and spend. I do try to do some local shopping as well (I look for sales every week).

One thing I didn't notice mentioned by the others is, in addition to hiring college students and seniors, they also hire people with disabilities. Many places won't do that.

As far as what they sell, not ALL items are made in China. It is up to the consumer to check where the product is made.
Reply:I will say that while I shop there I find some of their tactics distasteful.Sadly, with the way the economy is today I need the price breaks they ( seem) to offer.

I draw the line on clothing though because Walmart EXPLOITS the poorest of the poor in other countries and unrelentingly looks for cheaper and cheaper sources for clothing despite how the workers are treated... I just don't need a $5.00 shirt at that cost!

I am personally distressed that people fail to realize that Walmart has caused numerous losses of " good" jobs in America. They will bring in a companies product and then hound that company to keep lowering the cost to Walmart...The company once contracted to Walmart wants to keep the contract so they lower the cost any way they can....They close their American factory ( lay off workers) and find a Chinese ( or other foreign ) company to make the item for low cost to their specs , with their name on it...So they can keep the contract...Only the price is NEVER low enough for Walmart so eventually they find a cheaper source and they walk away from the ruined company.

When Walmart can't get well known American brands for a low enough price they find a overseas product for very cheap....

My brother calls Walmart the Made in China outlet!

Want to read an EXCELLENT book on this subject ?-----%26gt; http://www.amazon.com/Wal-Mart-Effect-Po...
Reply:Wal-Mart has done a lot of good for a lot of people. Sam Walton was a tremendous person, a good boss, a kind man, and someone who stood up for his values.

Wal-Mart and Sam's Club have been noted for their policies of employing senior citizens. They provide a shopping environment that is family friendly, and they provide economical solutions to people who may not have a lot of extra money to spare in their budgets.

Give Wal-Mart a hand of applause. They do so much we take for granted.
Reply:Walmart has decent things at a fair price
Reply:If it was so unethical to shop there in the USA they wouldn't be allowed to be here. . . so I shop away.
Reply:I did a paper on this, too. It's not okay because all of their products (a said 70%) come from factories at China with poor work ethics and child labor. Also Wal-Mart monopolizes small towns and small businesses (and therefore communities) suffer. They also don't pay their employess what they should and they have practically zero benefits. No one should shop at Wal-Mart. As they say there is a high price for the low cost.
Reply:Yes. Walmart offers good products at a good price, it provides millions of jobs, it donates money to the community and expands the tax base. It is an example of American capitalism at its best. There is a reason that it is the nation's largest retailer. The criticisms I have heard of Wal-Mar do not make sense to me.

Poor pay and benefits? No one is forced to work there. Find a better paying job!

Puts Ma and Pop stores out of business? Wal-Mart forces no one out of business. Stores that go out of business fail to do things as well as Wal-Mart does them. It is called competition in the marketplace, which is always good for the consumer.

People complain that Wal-Mart forces companies to sell to them at lower prices. No one forces any company to do business with Wal-Mart. It is a choice that they make.
Reply:My husband and I don`t shop at Walmart for different reasons. He believes that Walmart takes business away from local small businesses, and that they treat their workers terribly. I hate the busy atmosphere (especially shopping with my preschooler), and would rather pay the extra bit of money to have a less hectic shopping experience.

If this is for research, some colleagues of mine also snub Walmart, classifying the clientele as rude and "lowbrow".
Reply:I try to avoid Wal-Mart at all costs due to the very commercialized nature of the shopping experience.
Reply:It will be silly not to shop at the big supermarkets for ethical reasons because prices are much cheaper there.
Reply:I shop at Wal-Mart. I honestly see nothing wrong with shopping there. It offers low prices and for a fulltime college student with two jobs I need low prices. I would suggest watching the television show Pen %26amp; Teller Bullsh*it they have an episode about Wal-mart and how it actually benefits our economy. Good luck on your project
Reply:One side that I rarely see mentioned is how Wal-Mart has effectively raised the living standards of millions of lower-income Americans whose dollars wouldn't go as far if they had to go elsewhere.

And with things like clothing -- it's not just Wal-Mart. Good luck trying to find any (at least outside the more upscale clothing and department stores) that aren't made in some third-world country.

But for those who can easily afford to shop elsewhere -- especially the mom-n-pop stores -- there's something to be said for doing so
Reply:I see nothing pro or con re: morals or ethics in shopping at Walmart; I shop there because they every single thing under one roof and because they have excellent customer service and return policy you never have to worry about anything you buy there because you can always return it or exchange it and they have the best assortment of everything I need at the best price. I think people who look down on Walmart are low class snobs.
Reply:I shop there all the time. I work too hard for my money to pay higher prices for the same items somewhere else.
Reply:Where I live the people who shop at

wal mart are the people who are addicts, homeless, and on welfare( the people who abuse the system). So if you tell people you shop at wal mart your looked at differently. Besides, we have a target and its nice and clean.
Reply:wal-mart is my mom and grandma's 2nd home, they can spend hours just looking around at stuff they ain't gone buy. i like the store too
Reply:I don't think that it is wrong to shop at Wal-Mart. I just prefer Target. They have a Starbucks as you walk in so you can do some nice, civilized shopping while holding a hot latte and it's clean and organized with lots of great stuff to look at. The bathrooms are clean and I am treated like a customer that makes a difference instead of just one of the masses at Wal-Mart.
Reply:Wal-mart has good prices. I shop there sometimes.
