Is it acceptable at Wal-Mart?

Keeping in mind your morals and ethical views as well as criticisms against Wal-Mart, do you, as a consumer find it ok to shop at there? Why or why not?

[I am trying to answer this question for my senior research project, and was trying to get some input.]

Is it acceptable at Wal-Mart?
I'm all about free enterprise...so I shop at Wal-Mart...
Reply:I do not shop at walmart, because If i give them my money, and let them profit more.. then I become part of the problem.

I have not stepped foot in one in over 5 years, and have been very verbal about my dislike of them.

Countless lawsuits for labor violations, forced working off the clock without pay, stealing time from their employees.. All combined with the lack of benefits or a livable wage.

Their abuse of emminent domain, and targeted losses have costed many communitites more than a few dollar signs.

Once thier monopoly is established in a area, they jack the prices up and abuse their position.

Its simple.. just ask youself.. if they had "always low prices" How did each of sam's kids %26amp; wife get 18 billion EACH when he died? Their wealth, comes out of the pockets of those who can not afford luxuries of their own.

Sam, wanted to build up our nation.. to build up our towns, and made walmart great... There was a time, when walmart proudly displayed MADE IN AMERICA on their products...

They lost their patriotism when sam died.. and have now sold our country to china.
Reply:one poster mentioned that Wlamart doesn't give their full time employees health benefits, while this is true, most of the major retailers do not give health benefits either.

Their employees choose to work there. I like the lower prices, but I spread my money around to Target too. They always have better parking.
Reply:a lot of people feel that it is wrong because the evil giant is putting people out of jobs. However, with the higher prices elsewhere , people who are in low income families cannot shop elsewhere. It is like a paradox. If walmart went belly-up, then people would buy stuff at higher prices and still have low incomes.

People knock wal mart, but when you think about it what would each of us do/ Even the government "shops" for lower bids on building things.

How many of us would pay someone 20 bucks an hour to stuff money in the register? No one. We want the lowest price, and want to save money. The folks in charge of walmart want one thing.. money. They know if they loose one person, there are 20 more to take thier place.
Reply:Personally, I don't shop there. I shop at Costco. Costco starts their employees off at $10.25 per hour.
Reply:i think it is perfectly ok to shop there. some of us have no choice. they do have good prices on a lot of stuff, and if it means saving enough money to be able to afford something else you might otherwise not be able to afford, then so be it.
Reply:The question appears to be about ethics.

Walmart is not allowed by law to make its decisions based on the interest of mom and pop competitors, and the mom and pop competitors do not make their decisions with either each other not Walmart in mind.

All corporations attempt to provide customers with whatever level of service they must to retain business, while keeping the cost as low as they can. My recollection of most small businesses is that they have never been all that great as employers. So we have to compare Walmart with Macdonalds Restaurants, Burger King, K-Mart, and on and on.

If your complaint were that your ethnic group was being discriminated against in many other companies, Walmart at least appears to be an equal opportunity exploiter. That fact appears to be seen as a bad thing by many people?

Walmart came onto the market in a big way when China was coming to the fore as a supplier of goods. The ethical question here is should we continue to freeze out China and Chinese goods?

Now this is the ethical question, do we owe equal treatment to people who live outside our borders? Do we have an ethical duty to prevent our people from buying low priced goods made elsewhere? Or does our customer have to make that ethical decision for herself?

Clearly, Walmart has made the decision that the customer has to make the ethical decision.

As a customer with an ethical base, I will go to Walmart and make my own decision. By that I do not mean I will not buy products made in China,

I will avoid buying anything produced with near slave labor if I know of it.

But refusal to buy Chinese per se may send a signal to further cut prices, further cut wages.

That does not have a strong ethical base.
Reply:I dont like to shop there for the fact its grossely mass merchandised and there is nothing unique. Most of it is cheaply made, and its horrible to forget something on one side of the store and have to go the mile back from the other side to get it. Now you forget another thing and you have to go all the way back again. I suppose shopping at walmart could save you a gym membership. I also dont like the air quality, the store is so huge that its bad, and in the grocery section my eyes always get extremely dry and bloodshot which never happens at the locally owned ones and their cleaning section is seriously toxic. MY family members cant even go in that aisle because its suffocating and always smells really strong.

Its not even that cheap either. Like the grocery store I shop at their food is cheaper than supper walmart except for things like the cereal and some kinds of crackers but otherwise their meat and dairy is way more. Id support the little guys over them anyday.
Reply:Yes I find it fine to shop there. Not only do they have low prices but I can get my oil changed, grocery shop, bank and get a hair cut all in one store. I find the people to be helpful and friendly and I could care less about what goes on in corporate wally world as long as I can still get shampoo for 8 cents cheaper then the grocery store :D
Reply:i do not use wal-mart - not for ethical reasons - it's just too much of a zoo for me - it's a nasty place - couldn't work there - for ethical and moral reasons - but our society is very lacking in ethics and morals - so it's understandable that w-m is usually full of "consumers" - if they're not at wal-mart they'd just be somewhere else - there's a bottom to every barrel - wal-mart's it !!
Reply:Any wal mart haters really need to watch the episode of Penn %26amp; Teller covering the subject. Wal mart, while destroying small town businesses, is creating jobs for millions of americans, many who could not have found work outside of wal mart. Secondly, their use of sweat shops offers jobs to MILLIONS of foreigners that have absolutely no chance of making money any other way. Sure they dont pay worth a crap, but thats still more than they would make without it. Would you rather a 13 year old girl be making wal mart brand t-shirts or being a prostitute? These are the kinds of desicions that many people don't think about when they jump to conclusions and say that Wal-Mart is evil. Sure, they have single handedly nearly extinguished the old 50's lifestyle of mom and pop retail stores, but what is so bad about better prices and the convenience of being able to get everything you need in one place as opposed to driving all over town?
Reply:I prefer to shop elsewhere but I live in a small town and sometimes only WalMart carries what I'm looking for. I rationalize that WalMart does employ a lot of local people who need jobs.
Reply:i refuse to shop at wal-mart
Reply:I hate Wal-mart because of what it does to small business. But it is just so damn convenient.
Reply:I shop at Target the prices are the same except the ones at the end of the aisles. Plus get my groceries at a food store its alot cheaper and their next to each other same amount of walking.
Reply:As much as I wouldn't want to have the "mom and pop" grocery go out of business the truth is money is money and walmart delivers. They DO have cheaper prices and it IS a one stop shop.
Reply:i don't like all of the nasty people and lack of english speaking humans that shop there. i feel like i need to shower whenever I go into one.
Reply:I personally do shop at Walmart. I like the core principals that Sam Walton started...even though he was one of the richest men in the US, he lived like he had nothing. On business trips, everyone, including the boss, flew coach, and hotel rooms were always shared. Even a cup of coffee at the office required a 10-cent contribution to the tin. Government could learn something from him.

He didn't live like today's society does with instant everything, including instant gratification. In order to make a profit in business (why else would you be in business??), he didn't pay (still doesn't) employees much. Walmart does on a larger scale what MANY mom/pop business do just to survive.

So, Walmart is an American success story, even if people don't like how it got there. It wouldn't have survived to become as big as it is today if he didn't do something right.
Reply:Not only do I shop at Wal-Mart but my husband and several of the moms at my childcare work for Wal-Mart... We all have health insurance. I don't know what the guy who said they don't provide it for full time employees is talking about..... They do. we also have 401K's, stocks, incentives and many other things... They support our troops and they support charities.... Also I have seen them step up and help many a family in need.... When my cousins twins were born they knew there was a chance they wouldn't survive... Wal-Mart took out a life insurance policy for the twins on the parents behalf, with out the parents knowing.... We did lose one of the precious angels but what a blessing it was for the parents not to have to worry about the money part of it..... I shop at Wal-Mart they are a big corporation and they make mistakes but so do all the other ones.....
Reply:It's fine to shop their but it is completely horrible experience. Nascar fans and people in jazzies try to push me out of my their way when I wasn't even in it to begin with. Personally, I find shopping at Target much more enjoyable.
Reply:I do shop at Walmart. I don't like the ethics and morals of a lot of huge corporations (including the one I work for), but I need to make a living, and I need to live within my means. The things we don't like that we've all heard about Walmart exist in all sorts of other ways at corporations all over the world. Lending and banking policies are heavily criticized as well, but we still all need to bank, mortgage, etc.
Reply:Walmart is a pain in the keister! It's pretty much all we have where I live though. Kmart is a joke, we have 2 WAY OVER PRICED drug stores and the mall is an hour away, so it's Walmart. Parking is a joke, trying to shop when women and their bratty children aren't behaving is a joke, merchandise is out, never gets stocked, or you want something one day, the next day its not there, won't ever be delivered again, selection stinks. Was told by an employee, it's one of the smallest Walmarts in my state and that's why nothing is ever in stock.

A certain politician has her hands in Walmarts pockets, it's all Chinese, and I'm still stuck on other shoppers, I swear when they enter Walmart, their IQ drops to a negative number.
Reply:It is acceptable to shop at Wal-mart that is if you want to put the small guys out of business. I personally try to purchase my food products at a smaller grocery store chain because I feel Wal-mart has become greedy. Sam Walton would probably be sick if he knew what they have done with his empire. He did not base it on greed. Not only that 9 times out of 10 you will be overcharged at least one item or more everytime you check out. I know it's happened to me 9 times out of 10. I usually go to a check out where i have time to get my items on the belt so i can watch each item being scanned for pricing. More people should do this and they would find out they are being ripped off!!! Their rollback pricing is bull!! I worked there, it's a scam. That's my personal opinion!! We shouldn't let the small guys go out of business because of Wal-Mart's greed!!
Reply:ya i like shopping at wal-mart, just what sucks is if you ask for help sometimes none of the workers can speak english!
Reply:yes its perfectly fine for me. Infact its very convinient to be able to find basically everything under one roof. And I dont have to drive that far either. Moreover the stuff is cheaper that most other stores. I love Walmart.
Reply:i like shopping there it fits my budget. what i cant stand are the grown kids that run around and yell and scream and run into people and the parents just sit there and let it happen
Reply:i dislike shopping at wal mart because of the way they treat there employees for instance a full time employee gets no health benefits at all

dog teeth
